Mamelodi Sundowns currently face a potential squad shakeup, with 11 players set to have their contracts expire in June. This situation could open the door for rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to target key players.
Among those whose contracts are at risk are Themba Zwane, Khuliso Mudau, and Peter Shalulile, who have all been crucial to Sundowns’ dominance in the Betway Premiership, where theyβve claimed nine titles in the last 11 seasons.
Last year, Sundowns secured contract extensions for Ronwen Williams and Teboho Mokoena, ensuring their commitment for the next two to three years. However, with both Chiefs and Pirates looking to close the gap with Sundowns, there is a real possibility that some of their top players could leave for free.
This comes after Sundownsβ loss of Gaston Sirino to Amakhosi, where the attacker has made an immediate impact, scoring five goals across all competitions.
Key Players at Risk for Sundowns
- Themba Zwane: A pivotal figure in Sundowns’ midfield, Zwane is currently sidelined due to injury. If he becomes available, Chiefs are likely to show interest.
- Khuliso Mudau: Previously linked with a move to Europe, Mudau’s future at Sundowns remains uncertain, and itβs unclear whether heβll stay at Chloorkop next season.
- Peter Shalulile: Sundowns’ main attacking threat for years, Shalulile has recently been overlooked in favor of Iqraam Rayners. This could make him an attractive target for Chiefs or Pirates, should he seek a new challenge.
Other players whose contracts expire in June include Devine Lunga, Terrence Mashego, Marcelo Allende, Jody February, Sipho Mbule, Sphelele Mkhulise, Mothobi Mvala, Musa Lebusa, and Rivaldo Coetzee.
