The South African Police Service (SAPS) has assigned the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Investigations (FCS) unit to handle the investigation into a disturbing incident at Zanzou nightclub, where videos of extreme mistreatment have circulated online. The FCS unit specializes in investigating sexual offenses and is now focused on this case, which involves allegations of sexual assault, assault, intimidation, and kidnapping.

According to Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the national police spokesperson, a manhunt has been launched for eight foreign nationals believed to be responsible for the incident. Police are investigating multiple charges, including compelled rape, assault, and crimen injuria.

In response to the police’s call for victims to come forward, three individuals, aged 20, 21, and 22, reported to the Brooklyn police station in Pretoria. The victims explained that they were part of a group of five friends who had been subjected to the abuse. While the investigation continues, police are confident that the remaining two victims will be identified and their statements included in the case.

The incident reportedly took place in January 2023, following a dispute between the group of friends, nightclub bouncers, and a manager. The victims claim that they were forcefully taken into a storage room, where they were subjected to physical assault and coerced into performing degrading acts. These harrowing details are currently being investigated by the police.

In addition to the ongoing investigations, the police are asking for the assistance of a man known as Pablo, who claims to have been a former bouncer at the nightclub. Pablo has made public statements on social media about the incident, and law enforcement believes that he may provide valuable insights to help solve the case.

National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola has praised the Gauteng provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, and his team for their swift action in handling the case. He reassured the victims and the public that a thorough investigation is underway and that every effort will be made to bring those responsible to justice.

Police have urged anyone with information about the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward. Tip-offs can be shared at the Brooklyn police station or through the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111. Those with smartphones are also encouraged to use the My SAPS App to submit anonymous information.
