Orlando Pirates’ rising star Mbekezeli Mbokazi has quickly become one of the most thrilling defenders in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), even though he only started playing regularly in the second half of the season.
At just 19 years old, the left-footed defender has featured in 17 matches across all competitions this year, scoring once in the Nedbank Cup. His calmness, discipline, and strong presence on the field have marked him as one of the league’s standout defenders.
But the big question remains: Will Mbokazi stay with Orlando Pirates beyond this season?
Recently, there have been talks linking him to Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly. However, a move there seems unlikely for now, especially since Mbokazi has cemented his place in Pirates’ starting lineup under former coach Jose Riveiro — who is reportedly headed to Al Ahly and might want Mbokazi to join him.
From Pirates’ perspective, protecting Mbokazi’s future is crucial. Both Pirates and Al Ahly were knocked out in the CAF Champions League semifinals and will face off again next season. Staying at Pirates offers Mbokazi the best chance to grow, as he still needs time to polish his defensive skills.
The smart next step for Mbokazi would be to aim for a move to Europe after gaining more experience in the PSL. Another season or two would boost his confidence and development, unlike a potentially risky switch to Egypt, which hasn’t always worked well for South African talents — just look at Percy Tau’s mixed results after joining Al Ahly.
In the end, it’s up to Orlando Pirates to hold on to Mbokazi this season and wait for the right overseas offer to come knocking.
