Mamelodi Sundowns have added a promising new talent to their squad in central defender Keanu Cupido, and many believe he has what it takes to be the future of Bafana Bafana.

Diogo Peral, former assistant coach at Cape Town City, has praised Cupido for his ability to thrive in Sundowns’ style of play. Peral believes Cupido’s skillset aligns perfectly with the high-pressing, possession-based football that Sundowns are known for.

β€œKeanu is an excellent centre-back, especially suited for teams that want to dominate the game, like Sundowns. He’s ideal for a team that builds from the back and keeps possession. Not many defenders in the PSL can pass the ball as effectively as he can,” Peral shared on the Soccer Beat Podcast, as reported by FARPost.

Cupido’s ability to play the ball out from the back is one of his standout qualities. With great passing range, he can break defensive lines and even carry the ball into midfield when needed. Defensively, his speed makes him perfect for a team that plays a high defensive line, covering any gaps with ease. Peral also highlighted Cupido’s aptitude for stepping out of the backline to intercept and press when required, which is crucial for a team like Sundowns. Beyond his footballing ability, Peral described Cupido as a β€œgood human being” who brings no issues off the field.

Sundowns have also seen outstanding performances from Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro, who was instrumental in the team’s recent 3-0 victory over SuperSport United and their 4-1 win over Orlando Pirates. Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams shared his admiration for Ribeiro, calling him a “special” player with remarkable talent.

While Ribeiro has brought a Brazilian flair to the team, Williams emphasized the importance of Ribeiro maintaining humility and consistency, noting that the coaching staff and players continuously challenge him, particularly with his counter-pressing. Williams believes that Ribeiro’s willingness to learn and adapt to Sundowns’ high standards is a big reason for his success since joining the team.
