Kaizer Chiefs’ primary target for the left back position was Stellenbosch FC’s Fawaaz Basadien, but despite multiple attempts, the club failed to secure his signature.

In January, Chiefs renewed their efforts to sign Basadien, only to be thwarted once again. The defender recently committed to a new four-year deal with Stellenbosch, cementing his role as a key player for the team. This long-term contract made negotiations difficult, especially during the January transfer window.

Basadien has been one of the standout performers in South African football this season. In 45 appearances across all competitions, he scored seven goals and assisted eight times. His blend of attacking creativity and defensive reliability has been crucial for Stellenbosch’s strong defensive record and several clean sheets.

Now, reports suggest that Basadien is set to join Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns, leaving Chiefs to look elsewhere.

Chiefs Eye Alternative Left Back Options

According to a reliable source, Chiefs are now exploring other possibilities for the left back spot.

“The latest player under consideration is Nkanyiso Shinga, but convincing him to leave Portugal will be a challenge since his team just earned promotion to the top tier,” the source told The South African.

“The positive is that his contract expires at the end of this season, but he remains an important player for his club, and they might offer him a renewal,” the source added.

Shinga’s club, FC Alverca, finished second in their league, just one point behind CD Tondela, the team of fellow South African Sphephelo Sithole.

Although Shinga has missed the last two matches due to injury, the 25-year-old has been a regular starter throughout the season, making 20 appearances so far.
