Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has weighed in on the controversial second goal scored by Kaizer Chiefs in their recent 3-1 win over Stellenbosch, suggesting it should have been disallowed.
The match, which saw Chiefs advance to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, ended in drama. With the score tied at 1-1 in injury time, Chiefs appeared to have scored the winner. However, the linesman initially flagged for a possible foul on Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens.
Referee Sikhumbuso Gasa overturned the decision, allowing the goal to stand. Speaking on Soccerzone, Hlungwani disagreed with the referee’s call, arguing that the assistant referee’s original decision to disallow the goal was the correct one.

“From the position of the assistant referee, you can clearly see George Matlou not playing the ball, but rather making contact with the goalkeeper,” Hlungwani explained. “When you challenge the goalkeeper inside the goal area, the flag should go up, as it did, signaling a foul.”
Hlungwani also discussed the decision-making process, noting, “The assistant saw the foul, but the referee didn’t. Now, the review committee will look into the incident to confirm the right call.” He firmly stated, “The assistant referee made the right decision. This goal should have been ruled out as a foul.”
Hlungwani, who has faced criticism from some Chiefs supporters for his previous analyses, stands by his assessment of the situation.
