UWC Women Secure Crucial 2-0 Win Over Aigles de la Medina in CAF Women’s Champions League

Molatelo Kobo and Ntobifikile Ndlovu scored historic goals to help University of Western Cape (UWC) secure a crucial 2-0 win over Aigles de la Medina in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League on Tuesday. This victory came after UWC had suffered losses to TP Mazembe and ASFAR in their opening matches, meaning they needed a win to keep their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive.

The match, held in El Jadida, saw UWC dominate from the outset, creating early chances but failing to convert, with captain Amogelang Motau and Khanya Xesi missing key opportunities. Medina’s first real chance came just before the half-hour mark when Bineta Seck’s shot went wide. UWC continued to press, with Sibulele Holweni missing two golden chances, but the team was unable to break the deadlock before halftime.

In the second half, UWC made two key substitutions, with Kobo and Ronnel Donnelly replacing Xesi and Tiffany Kortjie. These changes had an immediate impact as Ndlovu’s goal was initially ruled offside by VAR. However, just moments later, Kobo scored a breakthrough goal in the 49th minute, assisted by Donnelly and Fikile Magama. Ndlovu sealed the win with a stunning goal in the 66th minute, courtesy of a precise assist from Koketso Mamabolo. UWC’s final group match will be against the 2022 champions ASFAR on Friday, where they still have a strong chance of advancing to the knockout stage.
