Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze has thrown his full support behind Mduduzi Shabalala, who is facing growing criticism over his recent dip in form. Once hailed as a rising star, the 21-year-old midfielder is now under pressure as Chiefs gear up for the crucial Nedbank Cup final.
Shabalala started the season with promise, scoring four goals and delivering an assist in his first 10 league appearances. However, that form has faded β he hasnβt registered a goal or assist in the last 16 matches. Fans and critics have been quick to voice their frustration, especially after he was partly blamed for a defensive lapse in the recent 2-1 loss to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby.
But Kaze is not letting the criticism define the player.
βWe didnβt lose because of Mdu or any individual,β Kaze said. βWe lost as a team β starters, substitutes, everyone. Itβs unfair to single out one player.β
He continued to highlight the role Shabalala played earlier in the season and stressed the need to support young talent during tough times.
βWe reviewed our performances this week and reminded ourselves of Mduβs impact at the start of the season. Heβs a special player, and in difficult moments like this, we need to stand by him. Thatβs how heβll grow.β
Despite being only 21, Shabalala has already made 78 appearances for Amakhosi, contributing eight goals and five assists. In most teams, someone his age would be gradually eased in β but at Chiefs, the expectations are immediate and intense.
Heβs not just learning; heβs expected to lead. And that comes with enormous pressure.
With the Nedbank Cup final approaching, Shabalala will have another chance to silence the doubters. Chiefs believe in his talent β now itβs time for him to show the rest of the country why.
