Cape Town City is reportedly closing in on the signing of former Bafana Bafana star Thulani Serero, potentially beating Kaizer Chiefs to his signature.

The 34-year-old playmaker, who recently left the Middle East after a six-year stint, is said to be in advanced talks with the Cape Town-based club. Before his time in the Middle East, Serero spent several years in Europe, first with Ajax Cape Town, where he was named Player of the Season in 2011, before moving to Ajax Amsterdam. His time in Amsterdam ended with him falling out of favor, eventually leading to his departure.

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral confirmed that Serero will join Cape Town City, revealing some details about his situation. β€œHe went back to the Emirates to sort out some personal matters. But he’s definitely a solution for us, just not in the game against Orlando Pirates,” Ertugral explained.

While Serero was once linked with Kaizer Chiefs, it now seems unlikely they will pursue him. Chiefs recently signed Thabo Cele and with Gaston Sirino in good form, adding Serero to their squad might no longer make sense. Serero’s return to the PSL would be notable, as he hasn’t played in the local league for almost 14 years.
