As the Springboks gear up for the 2025 rugby season, 54 players have been called up for upcoming training camps in preparation for the international fixtures kicking off on June 28 against the Barbarians. However, a handful of important players will be absent due to injury concerns.

Five notable Springboks—Frans Malherbe, Elrigh Louw, Ben-Jason Dixon, Deon Fourie, and Trevor Nyakane—have been sidelined and won’t join the alignment camp as they focus on recovery.

When Will These Stars Return?

  • Frans Malherbe: The experienced World Cup winner has been struggling with a persistent back injury since late March. He is expected to miss the rest of the Stormers’ season and may sit out the July internationals but is likely to be back in action for the Rugby Championship later in the year.
  • Elrigh Louw: The young talent is recovering from a severe leg injury and faces the harsh reality of missing the entire year’s competitions.
  • Ben-Jason Dixon: Currently out with a wrist injury, Dixon is expected to remain sidelined for the rest of the domestic season and will miss the July internationals. There is hope he’ll return in time for the Rugby Championship.
  • Deon Fourie: The seasoned Springbok is facing a long recovery from a serious ankle injury, likely keeping him out for at least three months. Although he may return to training before the Rugby Championship, his age—he turns 39 in September—suggests the coaching staff may start focusing on younger players for the future.
  • Trevor Nyakane: The veteran prop is battling a ruptured Achilles tendon. At 36, his return this year looks unlikely, and his international career may be nearing its end.
