Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Shane McGregor believes that winning the Nedbank Cup is essential for the club to consider this season a success.
The 61-year-old feels that the current Chiefs squad is not strong enough to challenge for top honors. He emphasized that the management must bring in more quality players next season to make the team more competitive.
McGregor spoke after Kaizer Chiefs’ 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-final, acknowledging that while the win was a positive result, it didn’t change his view on the team’s overall performance this season.
“It’s a good result for Chiefs. They’ve been struggling and not performing well, but they made it to the final,” McGregor told KickOff. “However, if just reaching the final is enough for the supporters, then that’s their view. But when I consider the season as a whole, it’s been disappointing, and that doesn’t change the fact that it’s been a bad year.”
With Chiefs heading into their first domestic final in six years, McGregor stressed the importance of winning. “They need to win the Nedbank Cup. If they don’t, they’ll be back to square one. They haven’t achieved much in recent years,” he said.
McGregor added that while reaching a final is an achievement, the future is what matters most. “Can this team take them to greater heights? They need to invest in quality players because the current squad isn’t good enough,” the former Chiefs striker concluded.
