Wydad AC head coach Rulani Mokwena couldn’t hide his disappointment after his side were held to a 1-1 draw against Olympic Safi on Wednesday night. The result continued a frustrating trend for the Moroccan giants, who have now shared the spoils in six consecutive league matches.

Wydad were in control for much of the game and looked on course for three points until a late lapse allowed Safi to snatch an equaliser in the dying minutes.

Title Hopes Hanging by a Thread

With just three games remaining in the Botola Pro 1 season, Wydad sit third in the standings. The only route to a CAF Champions League return next season would be by winning all their remaining matches and hoping AS FAR Rabat drop points.

It’s a tough ask, and Mokwena knows it. Yet, beyond the results, his focus now shifts toward the inevitable – his departure from the club.

Rulani’s Emotional Exit

Speaking to the media post-match, Mokwena remained honest and heartfelt about his future. His decision to leave hasn’t changed, and he insists it’s now in the president’s hands to finalise things. But one thing is certain — his love for Wydad runs deep.

“I’ve said before, I will leave at the end of the season. I love this club. If I ever coach in Morocco again, it will only be Wydad,” Mokwena said.

He went on to express his gratitude to the club’s leadership and staff, singling out the Wydad president as one of the best in Africa. But in a humble reflection, Mokwena admitted he feels Wydad may deserve a better coach right now.

“This club deserves to win trophies. Maybe someone else is better suited to lead them there at this moment,” he added.
