Royal AM is facing serious trouble, and recent developments are raising major concerns.
The club hasn’t played a match in any competition since 2024, with all of their games being called off. This comes after the Premier Soccer League (PSL) decided to suspend Royal AM’s matches while investigations into the owner, Shawn ‘MamKhize’ Mkhize, are ongoing. Currently, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) is overseeing MamKhize’s assets, including the club. Royal AM is now under the control of a curator, which has delayed player payments recently.
The lack of payment has caused significant issues, with players not being paid, and the club reportedly being locked out of their training facilities. Furthermore, Royal AM’s recent legal challenge against their curator was dismissed in court. Now, according to SABC Sport, the PSL is seriously considering expelling the club from the Betway Premiership.
SABC Sport reports that the PSL’s executive committee has been discussing the possibility of kicking Royal AM out, with the league potentially enforcing rule 57.13, which could leave the Premiership with just 15 teams instead of 16 for the 2024/25 season. Last week, Royal AM’s attempt to force the PSL and SARS to allow them to resume play was rejected in court.
Currently, Royal AM is at the bottom of the table with only 11 games played, earning just one win, five draws, and five losses, totaling eight points. They were also scheduled to play Milford FC in the Nedbank Cup, but that match was postponed. Their last match was on December 29th, and it could very well be their last in the PSL.
