Riveiro calls for all midfielders to contribute goals Orlando Pirates head coach, Jose Riveiro, views his midfield as an adaptable force that must rise to meet various game situations. Veteran Makhehleni Makhaula, in particular, has stepped up in an attacking role recently, adding more dynamism to his game. Since joining in January 2023, the 35-year-old has made 13 appearances in the league this season.
“Makhaula is typically more defensive, and Kabelo is more offensive, but in this team, we defend and attack as a unit,” Riveiro explained to FARPost. “Recently, Makhaula has taken a more offensive approach when we have possession, and he’s been impressive in that aspect.”
Riveiro also praised Kabelo Dlamini’s impact, noting his outstanding numbers across the league. “We played with two experienced players, and Dlamini’s stats are excellent. That’s invaluable to us,” the coach added.

Pirates face setback but remain in the race Orlando Pirates received a harsh reminder of the challenges ahead in the title race, suffering a 4-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns. However, Sundowns stumbled with a surprising loss to TS Galaxy in their subsequent match. With the Buccaneers trailing Sundowns by nine points but with two games in hand, there’s still hope for their Betway Premiership title ambitions. Up next is a Nedbank Cup Round of 16 clash at home against Baroka on Saturday, February 15.
Saleng’s situation mirrors Özil’s Arsenal saga? The situation with Pirates’ star, Monnapule Saleng, has drawn comparisons to that of Mesut Özil’s final years at Arsenal. After joining the Gunners from Real Madrid for a record fee in 2013, Özil initially dazzled with his playmaking and assists. However, his time at Arsenal ended in frustration, with the talented midfielder relegated to the bench under manager Unai Emery. Despite being the club’s highest-paid player, Özil’s potential was squandered, and many speculate that a falling-out with Emery led to his eventual departure—an eerie echo to Saleng’s current circumstances.
