Orlando Pirates are dealing with some internal issues as they prepare for their upcoming match against Cape Town City with a squad that is somewhat depleted.
Marawa Teases Saleng Story
Sports broadcaster Robert Marawa took to X on Monday, hinting that he has an important story about Monnapule Saleng. He said, “We have the story but will give the club 48 hours to address their fans on the matter. Otherwise, we will.” Saleng’s last appearance for Pirates was a 0-0 draw with Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League group stages in December 2024.
Pirates Regret Turning Down Big Offers for Saleng
Not long ago, Orlando Pirates had the opportunity to sell Monnapule Saleng to European clubs for around €2 million (just under R40 million). However, the Pirates board decided to keep the talented winger. In hindsight, that decision now seems questionable. Saleng, once a standout performer with 15 goals and 11 assists in the 2022-2023 season, has failed to make a single appearance in 2025. His last game for the club was against Al Ahly in December 2024. The Pirates management now seems to regret not cashing in on him, and are struggling to manage a player who appears unhappy with his situation.
Midfield Issues Ahead of Cape Town City Test
Pirates were set to face Golden Arrows on Wednesday, but the match was postponed. For their next clash against Cape Town City on Saturday, February 22, the club will be without influential midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula, who is suspended after receiving a fourth yellow card in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 against Baroka. Kabelo Dlamini, who played alongside Makhaula in that match, will retain his spot, but coach Jose Riveiro must now decide who will partner with him. Versatile midfielder Selaelo Rasebotja could be a key option.
