Amid negotiations for Oswin Appollis and Fawaaz Basadien, Orlando Pirates, currently second in the league, failed to secure any signings during the January transfer window.
While their hopes were high for landing Basadien, a deal could not be completed despite several months of discussions. With that in mind, Pirates are now shifting their focus to the 28-year-oldβs backup, Omega Mdaka.
Pirates Set Sights on Mdaka
Orlando Pirates are reportedly keeping a close eye on Omega Mdaka, a former Kaizer Chiefs academy product, who joined Stellenbosch FC last offseason under Steve Barkerβs management.

βIt seems theyβre really interested in Mdaka,β said SoccerLaduma. βWith the difficulty in signing Basadien, Pirates view Mdaka as a viable alternative. Heβs young and full of potential, so theyβre keeping tabs on him before making a move.β
An additional source close to the club shared, βThis could work out well for Pirates, as their focus right now is strengthening their left-back position. Innocent Maela hasnβt been playing regularly, and Paseka Mako just returned from injury. This is why Deon Hotto has been filling in there. Given the circumstances, Mdaka has become a top target for the clubβs scouts and recruiters. Weβll have to wait and see how it develops.β
