Orlando Pirates are on the lookout for a new head coach following the departure of Jose Riveiro.
The Soweto giants will soon announce a new manager, and with Riveiro leaving, the club’s management is now focused on finding his replacement.
Mokwena Becomes the Favourite for Pirates Job
Since Riveiro’s exit was confirmed, several high-profile names have emerged as potential candidates for the role, including Pitso Mosimane, Benni McCarthy, Rulani Mokwena, and Manqoba Mnqithi.
While Mosimane’s name has surfaced, both he and his agent have yet to comment on the speculation. As of now, these are just hopeful rumours, though the situation could change given Mosimane’s current availability in South Africa.
Benni McCarthy, another fan favourite, has also been linked to the Pirates job. However, this speculation seems unlikely as McCarthy has recently signed on with the Kenyan national team (Harambee Stars), ruling out any immediate return to South Africa.
Rulani Mokwena, formerly of Mamelodi Sundowns, is now considered the frontrunner. He recently parted ways with Wydad Casablanca, fueling speculation about a move to the Buccaneers. Mokwena, who previously had a brief and challenging stint with Pirates in 2019, may be eager to prove himself at the helm of the club. His availability and past connections to Pirates make him a strong contender.
In addition to Mokwena, Manqoba Mnqithi—another ex-Sundowns coach—has also been linked to the role, but again, this is based largely on rumour.
Internal Candidates: Carlos Nodar Paz and Mandla Ncikazi
At the same time, there are reports suggesting that Carlos Nodar Paz and Mandla Ncikazi, both of whom are part of the current coaching staff, could step up as the next head coach. If the club opts for an internal appointment, either of these two could be in line to take charge.
