Orlando Pirates are preparing to make a strong push in the upcoming transfer window after failing to secure any signings in January—a decision that may have impacted their title challenge.
Missed Opportunities in January
The Buccaneers had shown interest in key players, including Polokwane City’s Thabang Matuludi and Oswin Appollis, but ultimately failed to bring any new talent to Soweto. Meanwhile, rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs successfully strengthened their squads, signing stars like Jayden Adams (Sundowns) and Makabi Lilepo (Chiefs), who have already made an impact.
Pirates were in direct competition with Sundowns for the league title earlier in the season, but their lack of reinforcements proved costly. Injuries exposed their lack of squad depth, and they now find themselves 16 points behind the league leaders, despite having four games in hand.
Pirates Eyeing Key Reinforcements
Looking to bounce back, coach Jose Riveiro has set his sights on three Western Cape-based players: Stellenbosch duo Thabo Moloisane and Olivier Toure, as well as Cape Town City’s promising youngster Jaedin Rhodes.
According to reports, Pirates have prioritized Moloisane over his teammate Fawaaz Basadien, who appears content to stay at Stellenbosch. A club insider revealed that Moloisane is seen as a crucial addition to strengthen the defense, especially with Pirates aiming to compete across multiple competitions, including the CAF Champions League.
“Olivier Toure remains on Pirates’ radar as well,” the source added. “He’s one of the most consistent defenders in the league, and interest in his services is growing.”
Meanwhile, Rhodes is considered a key target for the offseason, as Pirates look to revamp their squad and avoid a repeat of their January struggles.
With the transfer window approaching, all eyes will be on the Buccaneers to see if they can make the signings needed to return to the top.
