Orlando Pirates Legend Offered Surprising New Role as Contract Nears Expiry
In a surprising turn of events, Orlando Pirates have reportedly offered long-time captain Innocent Maela a new role within the club, despite his current playing contract set to expire at the end of the season. According to trusted journalist Sinethemba Makonco, it seems unlikely that the veteran defender will have his playing contract extended.
Maela, a product of Pirates’ youth academy, has spent a significant part of his career with the club. After a loan stint with Thanda Royal Zulu, where he played a key role in the team’s promotion to the Betway Premiership, Maela returned to Pirates and quickly established himself as a leader on the field.
A Legacy of Milestones and Silverware
Since making his senior debut for Pirates in October 2017, Maela has become an integral figure in the clubβs history. He reached a milestone of 200 appearances in September 2024 during a match against Chippa United, and now boasts 207 appearances for the Buccaneers.
Although his time with Bafana Bafana has slowed down in recent years, Maelaβs legacy at Pirates remains intact. He has scored six goals for the club, with a memorable one coming in a heated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs. Over his career, heβs secured two Nedbank Cups, four MTN8 titles, and finished league runner-up four times, solidifying his place as one of the clubβs modern legends.
A New Phase on the Horizon?
At 32, Maela has played just over 280 minutes this season, as Pirates have been managing a demanding schedule across multiple competitions. With his contributions on the field decreasing, the club is preparing for a potential transition, offering Maela a new off-field role.
Though the exact details of the role remain unclear, sources indicate that if Maela accepts, he could retire from playing, ushering in a new chapter in his illustrious career at the club. According to sources, while his contract might not be renewed for playing, Pirates are keen to keep him within the club, offering him an alternative position.
“The club captain may not be renewing his contract,” a source confirmed, “but a new role has been offered to keep him within the Pirates family.”
