Orlando Pirates are facing a major setback as key player Thabiso Sesane is set to undergo surgery following an injury sustained last week.
The 24-year-old defender has been a standout in the Pirates’ defense this season, featuring prominently in their league matches. However, Sesane was absent for their opening league match against Mamelodi Sundowns, where the Buccaneers suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat.
Orlando Pirates confirmed on their official website that Sesane ruptured his tendon during their 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United. “Thabiso Sesane has been ruled out after suffering a ruptured tendon during Piratesβ hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United midweek. The injury, which occurred early in the match, has left the young defender in need of surgery,” said the club’s statement.
In addition to Sesane’s injury, the Pirates were dealt another blow with midfielder Thalente Mbatha also picking up a knock during the Sekhukhune match. Mbatha failed a late fitness test, which has sidelined him for the upcoming fixtures.
“Mbatha, the dynamic midfielder and Bafana Bafana international, has also been sidelined after a collision with an opposition player while attempting to shoot at goal,” Pirates explained. “While scans have ruled out any fractures, the discomfort in his foot has proven too much to overcome in time for todayβs clash.”
Mbatha has been an essential player for Pirates, scoring important goals and earning a call-up to the national team under coach Hugo Broos. The club’s medical team is hopeful that Mbatha will return soon. “The Bucs medical team has been working tirelessly to get Mbatha back on the pitch, but the decision has been made to prioritise his recovery. He will now focus on rehabilitation in the coming days, with hopes of a swift return to action.”
With the season now past the halfway mark, these injuries come at a critical point for Orlando Pirates. Sesaneβs absence will affect the defense, particularly after Sundowns’ strong performance against Thapelo Xoki. Additionally, Nigerian defender Olisa Ndah, who has been out since last season, is expected to return next month and help stabilize the defense.
The Bucs will now have to rely on their remaining players to step up as they face crucial fixtures in the league and other competitions.
