Orlando Pirates fans are divided over how the club is handling Monnapule Saleng’s situation. What’s next for the star?
Pirates Need to Resolve the Saleng Situation Quickly
The longer Orlando Pirates delay addressing Saleng’s future, the more it will affect their goals for the season. With Mamelodi Sundowns leading the Betway Premiership by 16 points, despite Pirates having four games in hand, the title race seems increasingly unlikely. However, the decision to bench Saleng could be seen as a deliberate move, signaling the club’s intention to part ways with him.
Orlando Pirates Could Profit from Saleng’s Departure
While Saleng’s reluctance to remain at the club is a concern, Pirates could still secure a solid transfer fee for the 26-year-old. The club’s record transfer was €2.3 million (R44 million) when Mbulelo Mabizela moved to Tottenham in 2003-2004. While it’s unlikely Saleng will fetch a similar amount, he could still bring in a respectable sum, especially given the reported interest from Ligue 1’s Monaco and Belgium’s Standard Liege. Pirates should aim to recoup at least half of that amount (R22 million), though the question remains whether they’re willing to sell him to a rival like Sundowns.
Pirates Should Cash In If the Offers Are Right
If Pirates receive offers around R40 million or similar, they should strongly consider selling. A transfer fee like that would give the club a great opportunity to strengthen their squad with local talent. Ultimately, no player is bigger than the club, and everyone has their price.
