Bafana Bafana defender Siyabonga Ngezana has opened up about why he turned down a big-money offer from Kaizer Chiefs to chase his European dream.

The 27-year-old centre-back, who spent several years at Naturena, was offered a fresh contract by the Soweto giants in 2023—along with the captain’s armband—but chose to leave the familiar behind for a shot at international growth. His heart was set on Europe.

Instead of staying with Amakhosi, Ngezana signed with Romanian giants FCSB. That gamble has paid off—he’s now a league and Super Cup champion after a successful first season abroad. The move has seen him evolve into a key player for FCSB in just over a year.

In an interview with SoccerBeat, Ngezana explained how the opportunity to test himself on a new stage was too big to pass up, even with a tempting Chiefs deal on the table.

“They offered me good money and the armband, but I knew I had to follow my dream,” Ngezana shared. “Europe has always been the goal.”

Having developed through the Kaizer Chiefs academy and made his name with the club, Ngezana’s story is one of ambition, courage, and stepping out of comfort to grow beyond borders.
