Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has come to the defense of new striker Tashreeq Morris following a goalless performance against his former team, SuperSport United, in a 4-1 defeat on Tuesday night.
Amakhosi endured their sixth league loss of the season, with Gaston Sirino being sent off and leaving the team with 10 men for the remainder of the match. Morris, who joined Chiefs in January, had hoped to score against his old side after finding the net for SuperSport earlier in the season. However, he couldn’t find the back of the net, despite playing the full 90 minutes.
Morris is one of three new signings at Chiefs, alongside Thabo Cele and Makabi Lilepo, who have both made an immediate impact, with Lilepo scoring twice in his first four matches. Despite Morris’ tough outing, Nabi defended the striker after the game.
βTodayβs game was an exception, and we cannot judge players based on just one match,β Nabi said. βWe need to assess them over a number of games. The team was extremely tired today, so this game shouldnβt be used as a reference.β
Nabi added that in the previous match, Morris had given his all, and the physical strain of that effort likely impacted his performance. Despite some questions surrounding Morrisβ signing, Nabi has shown confidence in the 31-year-old striker, especially as many of his other signings this season, particularly the two center-backs, have proven successful.
