Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has hit back at his critics following his dismissal from the club in December 2014. The 53-year-old coach was let go after a rough start to the season, which saw Sundowns suffer two cup defeats. However, in an appearance on the Golden Arrows’ Up Back Through Podcast on YouTube, Mngqithi made it clear that he is unfazed by negative comments.

He stated, “Sometimes critics don’t even have a clear identity. It would be unfair to myself if I let their opinions affect me. We choose these careers, and as they say, ‘No dogs bark at a car that’s not moving.’ If you’re doing something right, you become the target.”

Mngqithi expressed his confidence and resilience, saying that the club’s owner, Mato Madlala, understands his thick skin. “I don’t care about what people say,” he added. “I know my capabilities and don’t feel pressured by society’s expectations or opinions.”

Having spent a decade at Sundowns, mostly as an assistant coach, Mngqithi was appointed head coach following Rulani Mokwena’s departure. However, after just six months, he was replaced by Miguel Cardoso. Despite his short tenure, Mngqithi remains confident in his abilities, stating, “I am a strong believer in my principles, and I am confident in my capacity as a coach.”

With his career far from over, Mngqithi is certain he will land another coaching position soon. “I know I’ll get another job,” he said. “It’s inevitable, and with God’s grace, I’ve won too much.” Given the high turnover of coaches in the PSL, it’s likely that Mngqithi will soon be back on the sidelines.
