Mamelodi Sundowns continue their dominance in South African football, showing no signs of slowing down as they edge closer to another Betway Premiership title.
Sundowns One Step Away from Sealing the Title
On Wednesday night, Sundowns secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Chippa United, marking their 21st win in 25 matches this season. With only three games remaining, Sundowns need just four more points to officially clinch the title.
Currently sitting at the top of the league with 64 points, they hold a 12-point lead over second-place Orlando Pirates, who have 52 points. The remaining fixtures are as follows:
Remaining Matches:
- Sunday, 11 May: Stellenbosch FC (Home)
- Wednesday, 14 May: Chippa United (Away)
- Saturday, 17 May: Magesi FC (Home)
Miguel Cardoso’s Focused Approach
Despite being so close to glory, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is staying grounded and focused on what’s next. “We’ve got a tough match against Stellenbosch, and then we’ll face Chippa again in a slightly different venue than we anticipated,” Cardoso said, referring to the change in venue for the Chippa match to Buffalo City Municipality Stadium.
He also addressed the scheduling issues, as Orlando Pirates will play after Sundowns have finished their final fixtures, which could give them a chance to catch up. “It’s important for every team to finish at the same time. But we can’t control that, so we’ll focus on our own games and fight for the three points in each match.”
With the title within their reach, Cardoso remains determined not to let the celebrations begin too early. “We’ll celebrate today’s victory, but we have to focus on the next one,” he added. “Only when it’s mathematically done will we think about celebrating.”
