After a slow start at Orlando Pirates, Tshegofatso Mabasa has truly found his form, netting 40 goals in 112 appearances for the club.
Mabasa Sets Sights on Pirates’ Goal-Scoring Record
Now tied with Lesley Manyathela and Phumlani Mkhize for the most goals scored at the club, Mabasa has set his sights on surpassing Benedict βTsoβ Vilakaziβs impressive 52-goal tally. With Pirates still competing across three competitions, the 28-year-old forward believes he can break that record this season. His loan spells at Royal AM, Sekhukhune, and Swallows helped him evolve into a consistent goal-scorer.
Mabasa Inspired by Tso Vilakaziβs Record
The Betway Premiership Golden Boot winner has expressed a desire to etch his name into Pirates’ history alongside Tso Vilakazi. βTsoβs record of 52 goals for the Buccaneers is something that my teammates have reminded me of. Itβs not something Iβve focused on personally, but theyβve motivated and encouraged me to go for it and stay focused,β Mabasa said.
βI want to make sure I take every chance that comes my way to claim that record because my teammates believe I am one of the best strikers in the country. Their support means a lot to me, and this is something I really want to achieve by the end of this season.β
Pirates Prepare for Key Match Against Sundowns
The Buccaneers face their biggest test of the season when they go up against Mamelodi Sundowns. Pirates recently beat Sekhukhune 2-1, with Deon Hotto and Makhehlene Makhaula scoring, while Sundowns secured a 3-0 victory over SuperSport. With Pirates in strong form after victories over Kaizer Chiefs and Babina Noko, theyβll look to carry that momentum into Saturday’s crucial clash.
The match against Sundowns kicks off on Saturday, 08 February at 15:30. Pirates trail the champions by six points but have a game in hand, making this a pivotal game in their title pursuit.
