Kaizer Chiefs’ Surprise Signing Stuns Critics and Proves Them Wrong
Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach, Nasreddine Nabi, has responded to the backlash surrounding the clubβs acquisition of striker Tashreeq Morris from SuperSport United. Despite initial skepticism from fans, Nabi remains confident that Morris will make a significant impact on the squad.
Morris joined Chiefs in the second half of the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership season as part of a swap deal with Christian Saile heading to SuperSport United. The move immediately sparked debate, with many supporters questioning Morris’ goal-scoring record. However, Nabi insists the signing was a strategic decision to strengthen the teamβs attacking options.
Since his arrival, Morris has been integral to Nabiβs plans, starting in two consecutive matches. He played a key role in the 2-2 draw against AmaZulu and was also part of the 1-0 win over Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium.
Morris wasnβt the only new face in January 2025. Chiefs also brought in former South African junior international Thabo Cele and promising attacker Glody Lilepo.
In response to his critics, Nabi stood by the club’s choices, explaining that the recruitment process was thorough and designed to bring in players ready to contribute immediately.
βEvery time you recruit new players, you have to do your due diligence to get the right fit for your team,β Nabi said. βWe feel that we did our due diligence to bring in players who could help right away. In January, you need players who can step in and make an impact.β
He also spoke highly of the qualities Morris brings to the team. βTashreeq surprised a lot of people, but you need to look at the qualities he brings. Heβs a player who can hold up the ball, which gives us the time to move forward.β
Although Morris hasn’t scored yet, his contribution goes beyond goals. His pressing, work rate, and ability to create chances are already proving valuable for Chiefs. His performances indicate that he could become a crucial asset as the season progresses.
While doubts still linger, Nabi’s belief in Morris suggests that the strikerβs role at Chiefs is part of a longer-term plan. Only time will tell if the move pays off for Amakhosi.
