Kaizer Chiefs had the final say this season, defeating Orlando Pirates 2-1 in a thrilling Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. The victory not only marked an end to Amakhosi’s ten-year wait for a trophy, but also saw the club earn a hefty cash prize from the tournament’s sponsors.
Despite heading into the final as underdogs, with a somewhat lackluster season, Chiefs pulled off a stunning win against the defending champions, Pirates, who were aiming for a third consecutive cup title. It was former Pirates player Yusuf Maart who sealed the win for the Glamour Boys, scoring the decisive goal in the 80th minute. The match had started with a penalty from Gaston Sirino, but Pirates quickly equalized through Evidence Makgopa, setting the stage for an intense finish.
The win not only gave Chiefs the silverware but also a major cash reward. The club walked away with a R7 million cheque for their triumph, while Pirates, who finished second, were awarded R2.5 million for their efforts.
