South Africans are in shock and disbelief after it was revealed that Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada tested positive for cocaine.
Rabada’s abrupt return from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in early April, citing ‘personal reasons,’ raised concerns among fans. Many wondered why he left his Gujarat Titans team mid-tournament, speculating that something serious had occurred in his personal life. Unfortunately, the truth was even more unsettling.
The Test and Results
Rabada had returned to South Africa after learning that he had failed a doping test. The test was conducted following MI Cape Town’s SA20 match against the Durban Super Giants in January, where a urine sample was collected. The test revealed the presence of benzoylecgonine (BZE), a metabolite of cocaine, which is classified as a banned substance.
Under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations, the standard suspension for such an offence is three months. However, Rabada’s suspension was reduced to just one month after he completed a substance abuse treatment program approved by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS).
SAIDS confirmed the positive test and subsequent disciplinary action. “He provided the sample after the match, and the test came back positive for a substance of abuse,” said SAIDS CEO Khalid Galant.
Rabada decided not to have his ‘B’ sample tested, a move Galant called practical, saying, “If you know you did it, it saves you time and legal fees.”
Back on the Field
Following his one-month suspension, Rabada is free to return to the field. He remains eligible for international play and has been named in the Proteas’ 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s.
However, while South African sports fans often have short memories when it comes to controversies, many will not view Rabada the same way after this incident.
Public Reaction
The news has sparked a wave of disappointment and anger among South Africans. Comments flooded social media, with many expressing their shock and frustration:
- “As a fan of KG, I’m saddened by his actions. His brilliance on the field doesn’t excuse his drug use,” said Valerie.
- “Not great from a role model athlete,” commented Richard.
- “Can’t believe it. He was my favourite cricketer,” added Rodney.
- “Having more money doesn’t guarantee happiness,” said Monyekwa.
- “We never expected such from him,” shared Ndwakhulu.
- “It will be your downfall! Stop this bad habit!” warned Dalene.
- “Oh no, that is sad to hear. Not the kind of thing I thought he would be into,” said Julie.
Despite the controversy, Rabada’s future in the sport remains uncertain, and for some, his reputation may never fully recover.
