Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has returned to cricket after a surprising and emotional period off the field, following his abrupt departure from the Indian Premier League earlier this year. While initially labeled as a “personal matter,” it has now emerged that Rabada tested positive for a banned recreational substance — widely believed to be cannabis.
The 28-year-old, who had played just two matches for the Gujarat Titans this season, quietly left the IPL at the end of March. It’s since been confirmed that he faced a provisional three-month suspension, which was later reduced to just one month after he complied with South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) protocols, including an educational program on substance use.
According to sports journalist Cash N Sport, the situation has also come at a hefty financial cost. Rabada reportedly forfeited up to R23 million (pre-tax) from his lucrative IPL contract.
Now back in India and cleared to play, Rabada has spoken out publicly for the first time since the incident. In a statement issued via Cricket South Africa (CSA), he expressed remorse and emphasized his commitment to moving forward positively.
“I take full responsibility for my actions,” Rabada said. “I’ve let down many people, and for that I am truly sorry. But I won’t let this moment define me. I’ve learned from it, and I’m determined to return stronger and better — not just as a cricketer, but as a person.”
CSA acknowledged the incident as “regrettable,” but has stood by the star paceman, who thanked his team, legal advisors, and family for their unwavering support.
As he resumes his cricket journey, Rabada is determined to put this chapter behind him and refocus on what he does best — terrorizing batsmen with pace and precision on the pitch.
