Former Kaizer Chiefs player Junior Khanye has criticized Orlando Pirates for relying too heavily on Relebohile Mofokeng, especially as the young starβs form has dipped in recent matches.
Mofokeng, 20, has had a solid season so far, scoring two goals and providing five assists in the league. However, his performances have dropped as Pirates struggled, losing four of their last nine league matches. Khanye believes that Mofokeng should not be blamed when the team underperforms.
βYou can see that certain players win games, not the team as a whole,β Khanye said on iDiski TV. βWhen Pirates lose, everyone points fingers, but I wonβt fault Mofokeng if heβs not performing. Heβs still young, and the pressure on him is huge. Every time he gets the ball, thereβs always someone assigned to keep an eye on him.β
Khanye praised Mofokengβs skill and intelligence but acknowledged that heβs still maturing as a player. He added, βMofokeng has won so many games for Pirates, but you wonβt hear supporters acknowledge his contributions, especially with Tito Maswanganyi complementing him.β
The former Chiefs star also suggested that other Pirates players, who have underperformed, should share the responsibility. βPlayers like Thalente Mbatha and Kabelo Dlamini were nowhere to be found in tough games. Others need to step up and support Mofokeng, especially when heβs under pressure,β Khanye emphasized.
