Orlando Pirates fans are preparing to part ways with one of their most successful modern-day coaches, Jose Riveiro. What was meant to be a farewell at the end of the season has come sooner than expected.

The Spanish tactician, who had already announced in April that he would be stepping down at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, has now been granted early release by the club.

Early Exit Confirmed

The Buccaneers officially confirmed that Riveiro will take charge for the last time when Pirates face Golden Arrows on Tuesday night. After that, his time in the dugout will be over.

In a club statement, chairman Dr Irvin Khoza explained the decision:

“Jose came to us a few weeks ago and requested to leave before his contract officially ends, as he has already signed with a new club,” said Khoza. “We respected his request but chose to hold off on announcing it until after the Nedbank Cup final.”

While the name of Riveiro’s new club hasn’t been officially revealed yet, reports suggest a move to North Africa may be on the cards — with Al Ahly in Egypt believed to be his next destination.

A Respected Departure

Khoza acknowledged Riveiro’s contributions during his time in Soweto, stating:

“He’s left a lasting impact at the club — both in terms of results and philosophy. Ideally, we would’ve liked to send him off properly, but we support his decision to move forward.”

What’s Next for Pirates?

With Riveiro departing earlier than planned, assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi will step in as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The search for a new permanent manager is expected to begin soon.

As Pirates close the chapter on the Riveiro era, fans are left with a mix of gratitude and uncertainty. One thing is certain — the Spaniard departs having made a mark in South African football.
