Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro is set to leave the club immediately after their match against Golden Arrows on Tuesday.
The Spanish coach enjoyed a highly successful stint with the Buccaneers, claiming five trophies over three seasons. In a surprising move, Riveiro announced in April that he would be departing when his contract expires in June. However, after a tough loss to Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final, his frustration was evident during the post-match interview.
“There is no last dance. We have a game on Tuesday, and we have to win,” Riveiro remarked.
On Monday, Pirates confirmed Riveiro would leave earlier than expected, revealing that he had requested to be released from his contract ahead of schedule due to a new opportunity at another club. Chairman Irvin Khoza shared the news, explaining that while they had planned to honor Riveiro after the season, they respected his decision to leave before his tenure officially ended.
“His contribution since joining the club has been invaluable,” Khoza said. “We’ve learned much from him, and he has learned from us. Coach Riveiro’s legacy will remain a part of the club’s history, and we respect his decision.”
In a heartfelt statement, Riveiro expressed his gratitude toward Pirates for granting him an early release. “This is an emotional moment for me. I’m thankful to everyone at the club – from management to the players, and everyone working behind the scenes. The support from the fans has been incredible, and I’ll always carry that passion with me.”
Riveiro leaves behind an impressive record, with five trophies to his name. As he exits, he is expected to take up a new role with Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
