In the exciting return of our publication to store shelves, we feature none other than Kaizer Chiefs legend and long-time number one goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, who takes a nostalgic dive into one of the biggest “what-ifs” in South African football β€” the time he came close to signing for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Khune, who has been with Kaizer Chiefs for over two decades, reveals a lesser-known chapter of his career, one that almost saw him trade the gold and black of Amakhosi for the yellow of the Brazilians. Speaking exclusively to our magazine, Khune shared how the move nearly materialised and what ultimately convinced him to stay loyal to the Soweto giants.

β€œYes, there was a point when Sundowns showed serious interest,” Khune admits.
β€œNegotiations were ongoing behind the scenes, and at the time, I was considering my future and the next step in my career.”

The potential move reportedly came at a time when Chiefs were going through a rough patch, both on and off the field. With uncertainty around coaching staff, club vision, and his role in the team, Khune was tempted by the financial package and the promise of a fresh start with a club consistently challenging for trophies.

β€œEvery player wants to compete for titles, and Sundowns were building a very competitive squad. It was tempting, no lie,” he said.

However, what pulled Khune back from making the switch was not money or trophies, but something far more personal β€” legacy.

β€œAt the end of the day, I had to think about what Kaizer Chiefs means to me. This club gave me my start, my identity. I couldn’t see myself celebrating in front of these fans while wearing another shirt,” he explained.

Khune also highlighted the importance of family and loyalty in his decision, pointing out how his roots and upbringing always taught him to finish what he started.

β€œI grew up in the Kaizer Chiefs system. It’s more than football β€” it’s family. That was the ultimate deciding factor,” he added.

As the club’s most-capped goalkeeper and one of the most iconic figures in South African football, Khune’s commitment to Chiefs has become legendary. His decision not only solidified his place in the club’s history books but also made him a symbol of loyalty in a football era often dominated by money-driven moves.

Today, even as Khune edges toward the twilight of his career, he remains a central figure in the dressing room β€” a leader, mentor, and symbol of what it means to wear the Kaizer Chiefs badge.

β€œI don’t regret turning down that offer,” Khune concludes with a smile.
β€œI stayed true to myself, and that’s something money can’t buy.”

As we return to shelves with this first edition, what better way to mark the occasion than with a heartfelt story of loyalty, passion, and identity β€” values that Itumeleng Khune embodies to this day.
