Orlando Pirates may soon face the prospect of losing their star player, Patrick Maswanganyi, amid growing interest from Portugal.

Earlier this season, reports suggested that the 26-year-old winger had set his sights on a return to Europe, a move that was encouraged by his former mentor, Farouk Khan. Khan, speaking about Maswanganyi’s ambitions, stated, “He is ready for Europe. He really wants to play there. If Orlando Pirates allow him to leave, it will benefit not just the club through the sale, but also the player and the country. He could have stayed in Portugal longer, but he was too impatient at the time. Many players from countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Africa use Portugal as a stepping stone to bigger leagues in Europe. He could’ve been patient, but there’s still time for him to make a big move now.”

While Pirates are reluctant to part with one of their key players, the Portuguese side UD Oliveirense is reportedly serious about bringing Maswanganyi back to Portugal. The club is said to be willing to meet the asking price of around R40 million that Pirates have placed on the winger’s head.

Reports suggest that negotiations are no longer just preliminary inquiries but have now entered a more serious phase. A source told Siya that “they really want him back in Portugal” and that they are pleased with the progress Maswanganyi has made in South Africa. The key factor, however, will be whether UD Oliveirense can afford Pirates’ asking price.

While a move may be imminent, it’s expected that Maswanganyi’s potential transfer could take place after the conclusion of the current season, especially as Orlando Pirates are focused on their push for PSL and CAF Champions League glory.

The main stumbling block remains the R40 million price tag placed on the Bafana Bafana star. “Maswanganyi is one of the best players in the country now, and if Pirates want that amount, then UD Oliveirense must either meet or exceed it,” the source added. “Since negotiations are now underway, it all depends on the offer that UD Oliveirense puts on the table for Pirates.”

It looks like the next few months could be pivotal for both the player and the club, as they navigate his future.
