Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has praised the exceptional performances of his players but acknowledges the tough task ahead in selecting his final squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Morocco. While the competition for places is a positive sign, Broos admits that some deserving players will inevitably miss out.
“The players have been outstanding, and that makes my job harder β but in a good way,” said the 72-year-old coach. “The more difficult the choices, the better it is because it shows we have very talented players. Three years ago, selecting the squad was much easier because the pool of quality players was smaller.”

With only 23 slots available for the Afcon finals, Broos emphasized that not everyone who deserves a spot can be accommodated. However, he reassured those who might miss out that they remain part of the teamβs larger plans. “Unfortunately, we will have to disappoint some players, even those who might deserve to be in the squad. But they should know that if there are injuries or other issues, we wonβt have to look far. We already have a solid list of players ready to step in,” he added.
As South Africa prepares for the prestigious tournament, Broosβ words highlight the growing depth in the national team and the positive strides Bafana Bafana has made in recent years. While the final selection may be tough, it reflects the progress and competitiveness within the squad.
