South Africa’s rugby community is in mourning following the untimely death of former Springbok and Blitzbok star Cornal Hendricks, who passed away from a heart attack on 14 May 2025 at the age of 37.
Hendricks, known for his explosive pace and resilience, had bravely battled a heart condition throughout his career. His funeral is set to take place on Sunday, 25 May in his hometown of Wellington in the Boland. Ahead of his burial, memorial services will be held on Thursday, 22 May in Wellington at the Boland Rugby Stadium, and another on Friday, 23 May in Paarl, where he was born.
A Dual-Code Star Who Inspired Many
Hendricks proudly wore the green and gold for both the Springboks and the Blitzboks. He earned 12 Test caps between 2014 and 2015, scoring five tries, and also helped South Africa’s Sevens side win gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. His debut for the Springboks came in June 2014 against Wales in Durban.
Beyond the international stage, his professional career saw him feature in 233 first-class matches across teams like the Boland Kavaliers, Cheetahs, and the Bulls. Notably, he made a courageous return to professional rugby with the Bulls after being sidelined in 2015 due to his heart condition, going on to win back-to-back Currie Cup titles in 2020 and 2021.

Tributes have poured in, led by SA Rugby President Mark Alexander, who remembered Hendricks as a player full of energy and heart—a man deeply respected across the rugby community. His story of determination and comeback after a life-threatening condition inspired many, making him not just a star on the field, but a symbol of hope off it.
Cornal Hendricks leaves behind a legacy defined by skill, spirit, and the strength to overcome adversity. He will be remembered not only for his achievements but for the joy and humility he brought to the game and those around him.
