Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates coach Gordon Igesund believes he could have secured league titles with Kaizer Chiefs if given the chance.
With over 10 coaching stints under his belt, the 68-year-old revealed that Kaizer Chiefs never came knocking for him, despite his impressive track record. Igesund has won four league titles with four different clubs, earning a reputation as one of the best coaches in PSL history.
Speaking on SoccerBeat, Igesund shared that had he been offered the job at Amakhosi, he’s confident he would have added more titles to their collection.
“No, they never actually approached me. I wish they had, because they would have won more titles, that’s a fact,” Igesund said. “I see they’ve had so many coaches in recent years, and I don’t even know how many because I never counted. I don’t think the current coach has fully settled in. He seems like a good coach, but it looks like he’s still figuring out his best team.”
Igesund also mentioned he would have loved to coach Kaizer Chiefs during his availability, adding, “For whatever reason, I never coached one of the top three teams in the league and still won titles, so I’m confident I could have won the league with them.”
Currently running Hamiltons Football Academy in Cape Town, which he co-founded in July 2018 with Ryn Russell, Igesund was overlooked for the Kaizer Chiefs job in 2015 when Stuart Baxter resigned, despite his successful tenure as Bafana Bafana coach from 2012 to 2014.
