Gayton McKenzie, the outspoken Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, couldn’t resist sharing his thoughts after Kaizer Chiefs’ dramatic victory over Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final this past weekend.
The match, which saw Chiefs secure a 2-1 win, marked a significant moment for the club, as they ended an 11-year trophy drought. Chiefs’ victory sparked celebrations among the Amakhosi faithful, who had endured years of frustration without a major cup.
Gaston Sirino opened the scoring early for Chiefs, only for Evidence Makgopa to level the game before halftime. However, a stunning volley from Yusuf Maart in the second half sealed the win and handed Chiefs the much-needed trophy.
McKenzie took to social media the following Monday to share a message that was equal parts playful and layered with deeper meaning.
“I don’t like this team, Kaizer Chiefs, it has caused me a lot of heartache in my life,” McKenzie said, before adding, “But we should not let our hatred for Kaizer Chiefs blind us to the fact that it is an institution loved by millions. The streets of KZN were pure joy. Biggest team in Africa ever!”
Who Does Gayton McKenzie Support?
Despite his connection to the PSL, McKenzie, who hails from Heidedal in Bloemfontein, hasn’t yet pledged his allegiance to any PSL team since the sale of Bloemfontein Celtic in 2021. Although some have tried to sway him toward one of the Soweto giants, McKenzie has consistently stated that he remains a loyal Bloem Celtic supporter and currently supports all PSL teams equally.
In a previous interview, McKenzie humorously compared his situation to a man whose wife is in a coma, explaining, “You look around but you don’t touch, knowing your wife will come back. You can’t be from the Free State and Bloemfontein and support anyone else.”
