As the PSL season wraps up and award talks heat up, Gavin Hunt isn’t convinced that Mamelodi Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro deserves the Player of the Season title. Instead, he’s backing players like Teboho Mokoena and Orlando Pirates’ Makhehleni Makhaula for the top honours.
Chatting on SuperSport TV over the weekend, the former Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United coach shared his thoughts on the hype around Ribeiro. Hunt questioned whether the Brazilian would shine as brightly in a smaller team setup.
“Ribeiro gets goals, sure. But throw him into a team like Magesi, and I don’t think he’d manage. He’d need to work much harder,” Hunt said.
He added, “For me, Teboho Mokoena is the best player in the country. And at Pirates, that midfield guy—Makhaula—he’s the heartbeat of the team. He holds it all together.”
