Malawian international Gabadinho Mhango has finally opened up about the disappointment surrounding his failed transfer to Kaizer Chiefs. Now playing for Marumo Gallants, the prolific striker was on the verge of joining the Soweto giants in 2023, but the deal collapsed unexpectedly at the last moment.
At the time, Chiefs were desperate for a center-forward, with Caleb Bimenyimana set to leave and Ashley Du Preez as their only reliable option. The club actively pursued strikers but only managed to secure Ranga Chivaviro from Marumo Gallants ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Mhango, who was with AmaZulu FC, had high hopes of joining the famous black and gold team. He even traveled from Durban to Johannesburg, anticipating the finalization of the transfer, but the deal fell through without any explanation.

The former Orlando Pirates striker expressed his frustration, revealing just how close he came to joining Chiefs.
“It wasn’t just talk, but I was about to go to Chiefs, and then things turned around. Up to now, I don’t even know what happened,” Mhango shared.
“I was at AmaZulu, and I actually traveled from Durban to Joburg to complete the move. I was excited about joining Chiefs, but then things changed,” he continued. “I was looking forward to it, but in the end, I was disappointed. However, I’m enjoying my game and the place where I ended up.”
Finding Stability at Marumo Gallants
After the failed Chiefs move, Mhango joined Moroka Swallows on a free transfer in August 2023. However, following Swallows’ disbandment, the 32-year-old found a new home at Marumo Gallants.
Despite the setbacks, Mhango has performed well at Gallants, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 14 appearances. His main focus now is helping the team secure their place in the Betway Premiership, with Gallants currently sitting in 13th place, seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Will Chiefs Regret Their Decision?
With Mhango showing his worth at Gallants, questions remain about whether Chiefs made the right decision in pulling out of the deal. His experience and goal-scoring ability could have provided much-needed support to their attack.
