Morne Steyn will forever be a significant figure in Springbok history, having earned 68 Test caps during a distinguished career. His 52 starts at flyhalf rank him second on the all-time Springbok list for that position, with only Handre Pollard ahead of him on 61 starts.

Steyn’s journey began with the Bulls in Pretoria, where he played a key role in their Super Rugby victories in 2007, 2009, and 2010. His career later took him to France, where he joined Stade Français in the Top 14 and became an essential player for the club over a seven-year period.

On the international stage, Steyn made his mark with the Springboks, but he’ll be best remembered for his clutch performances against the British and Irish Lions. In 2009, as a young player, he famously kicked a series-winning penalty from near the halfway line. His crowning moment came in 2021, when he kicked another game-winning penalty against the Lions, cementing his place in history after making an impressive return to the national team.

Steyn retired from international rugby in 2021 and had a final stint with the Bulls before retiring from the game, leaving behind a legacy of clutch kicks and remarkable goal-kicking accuracy.

So, what is Morne Steyn up to now?

Despite his long association with the Bulls, it was the Lions, their crosstown rivals, who surprisingly announced that Steyn would be joining them for the 2023/24 United Rugby Championship season. With 68 Test caps and over 700 Test points, Steyn took on the role of kicking consultant for the Lions, working closely with the team’s goal kickers.

Steyn revealed that although he had hoped to remain with the Bulls, coach Jake White didn’t want him involved with the senior team. “I spoke to the Bulls and was supposed to start in August with the juniors, because the senior team do not want me as a kicking consultant or coach,” Steyn shared. “Behind the scenes, I heard Jake didn’t want me there anymore. He had other plans.”

While the Bulls have not had a kicking coach since Vlok Cilliers left, Steyn noted that assistant coach Chris Roussouw was managing the kicking game for the team.

On his new role with the Lions, Steyn expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, citing the team’s promising talent and professionalism. “The Lions are a team with exciting talent and the potential to achieve great things,” Steyn said. “I’m excited to help make a difference in their kicking strategy, especially with the quality ball strikers they have.”

Outside of rugby, the 40-year-old Steyn co-founded The Altitude Wealth Group, a multifaceted financial services company.
