Bakkies Botha, one of the most physically imposing rugby players in history, was known for his toughness and relentless determination on the field. During his time with the Springboks and the Blue Bulls, the man nicknamed “Yster” formed a powerful lock partnership with Victor Matfield, often considered one of the toughest locks in the world at the time.

A Tough and Towering Presence
Bakkies Botha made his Springbok debut at 23 in 2002 against France in Marseille, going on to earn 85 caps for South Africa and playing in three Rugby World Cups, including the victorious 2007 campaign.

Not only was Botha tough, but he was also known for his size, strength, and combative style of play, which often led to disciplinary issues. In April 2009, he received a three-match suspension for striking Phil Waugh during a Super 14 match. Later that year, in a match against the British & Irish Lions, he was banned for two weeks after a dangerous charge on Lions prop Adam Jones, leaving him with a dislocated shoulder that required surgery.

After leaving the Blue Bulls in 2011, Botha moved to France to join Toulon, where he played for four years before retiring from rugby.

What Is Bakkies Botha Doing Now?
Following his retirement from professional rugby, Bakkies has turned his focus to farming in Limpopo. In a recent interview with Agrico, he shared his experience transitioning into agriculture and the challenges that come with it.

“Rugby gave me the opportunity to travel the world and experience many cultures, but I always knew I wanted to come back to South Africa,” Botha explained. “It’s the people here that make this country so special.”

When asked about life on the farm, Botha shared his thoughts on the tough realities of farming. β€œFarming is not for the faint-hearted,” he said. “It comes with challenges like droughts, disease, and fluctuating market prices. But the rewards are far greater than the obstacles. Each day is a new lesson, a new challenge, and the opportunity to grow. That’s the beauty of it.”
