As the Springboks prepare for the next two seasons, there’s a clear plan in place: manage the squad wisely to ensure that key members from the 2023 World Cup-winning team are still around to help defend the title in 2027. But with time ticking and injuries mounting, the reality is that not everyone will make it to the next tournament.

Already, we’ve had to say goodbye to a few beloved Bok warriors.

Deon Fourie
People might not realize that Fourie was actually leading the team on the field in the closing moments of the 2023 World Cup final. He stepped up big time, filling in at hooker after Malcolm Marx’s injury. Sadly, Fourie recently broke his tibiaβ€”a devastating injury that could sideline him for the rest of 2025. Given that he’ll be 39 soon, it’s unlikely we’ll see him back in Springbok colours. He’s given his all, and now it’s time for the next generation to take over.

Trevor Nyakane
A true servant of South African rugby, Nyakane’s had a tough year. A ruptured Achilles has left him facing a long recovery process. Even before the injury, his role in the Bok setup had begun to fade as the team looked ahead to 2027. At 36, it seems his journey in the green and gold has come to an end. He leaves behind a legacy of commitment and heart.

Steven Kitshoff
Kitshoff’s story is perhaps the most heartbreaking. Forced into early retirement by a neck injury, he won’t get the send-off he deserves. At just 33, many believed he had another World Cup run in him. Known for his power and consistency, Kitshoff will be sorely missed both on and off the pitch.
