The prestigious 2025 FIFA Club World Cup trophy has officially arrived in South Africa, with Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopi Motsepe unveiling it on Thursday, 6 February. FIFA officials visited Sundowns’ headquarters in Chloorkop, Johannesburg, where Motsepe had the honor of showcasing the trophy to the gathered media.
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will take place in the United States, running from 14 June to 13 July. Sundowns are the only Southern African club to be part of this expanded global competition, which will feature four African teams: Sundowns, Al Ahly, Wydad Athletic Club, and Espérance.
As reported by The South African, Sundowns are set to earn a massive R1 billion for their participation in the tournament. This marks Sundowns’ second appearance in the FIFA Club World Cup, having previously competed in 2016 after winning the CAF Champions League by defeating Zamalek.
According to One Football, just by qualifying for the competition, Sundowns will receive €50 million (R1 billion). The total prize pool for the tournament is around €2.5 billion, with €2 billion allocated to the 32 teams that make it to the USA. Results-based bonuses will also be awarded, and the winner of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will take home €100 million on 13 July.
