Transfers directly between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are extremely rare, even when players move for free.

Typically, once a player has chosen their side in Soweto, it’s seen as a long-term commitment. However, there have been a few notable exceptions in recent years. The most famous example is Jimmy Tau, who made the controversial switch from Pirates to Chiefs in 2005, leaving as captain of the Buccaneers and joining Chiefs as their new captain. This move sparked significant outrage from Pirates fans. Other notable moves between the two sides include Lehlohonolo Majoro and Brilliant Khuzwayo, both of whom made the switch on a free transfer. However, the most historic move in recent times is Bongani Sam’s transfer from Pirates to Chiefs earlier this season, marking the first time a transfer fee was involved in a move between the two clubs.

Now, in a similar move, young full-back Duane Bennett has made a switch from Chiefs to Pirates. The South African U20 right-back recently moved from Chiefs’ development team to Orlando Pirates, where he will play for their feeder team, Pele Pele FC, who compete in the ABC Motsepe League.

Duane Bennett’s Move to Pirates
Bennett, who was on loan from Chiefs to Wits University in the ABC Motsepe League in 2024, has impressed with his performances, earning national team call-ups. He was a key player in Chiefs’ victories in the Engen Champ of Champs in 2022 and the Gauteng Development League Cup in 2023. Now, he is set to continue his journey with Pirates, joining their junior teams in the Safa Men’s Regional League, ABC Motsepe League, and DStv Diski Challenge.

This move further highlights the rarity and significance of players switching between the two Soweto giants.
