Earlier this year, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus called up a group of 26 players, mainly from overseas, for a virtual alignment camp in preparation for the upcoming season. While the squad didn’t feature many surprises at the time, circumstances have since changed, creating opportunities for some unexpected players.
Initially, it was known that Elrigh Louw would miss the season due to a serious leg injury. However, the Springboks have suffered another setback with the news that Jasper Wiese has also been ruled out due to a neck injury. This will likely open the door for younger players like Ruan Venter and Cameron Hanekom to step up, but there are still a few overseas-based players who could make a surprise comeback.
Could Rassie Erasmus be considering any of these ‘bolters’ for the Springboks?
Ruan Ackermannβs Unseen Potential
One player whoβs been flying under the radar is former South Africa A loose forward Ruan Ackermann. After leaving the Lions in 2017 for Gloucester, Ackermann has become a club legend in England. Despite his consistent form and eligibility to play for England, he has yet to be considered by the English selectors. However, he has made it clear that he would be open to a Springbok call-up.
At 29, Ackermann has a wealth of experience, and now could be the perfect time for the Springbok coaches to give him a closer look, especially given the current gaps in the loose-forward positions.
Juarno Augustus: A Future Star Reignited
Another player who has been on the radar for years is Juarno Augustus. After being named Player of the Tournament at the 2017 World Rugby Under-20 Championship, Augustus was widely regarded as a future Springbok. Although his form has been inconsistent over the past few years, his move to Northampton Saints revived his career, and now at Ulster, he could finally be in a position to showcase his skills for the national team.
Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg: The Experienced Option
Lastly, Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg, who earned one Springbok cap in 2021, has long been on the national radar but has yet to secure an extended run with the team. With years of experience at Montpellier in France, the 30-year-old could be well-placed to step up and contribute in the upcoming season.
With these players in the mix, Rassie Erasmus will have a wide pool of talent to consider as he prepares for the next chapter in the Springbokβs journey.
