Orlando Pirates are facing a major task with the impending departure of coach Jose Riveiro.

As Riveiro prepares to leave the club, management must act quickly to appoint a new head coach, someone who will have some big shoes to fill. Among the names making the rounds is that of Bucs and Bafana Bafana legend, Benni McCarthy, who has been linked with the Pirates hot seat. Here’s the latest on the situation.

Benni McCarthy Linked with Pirates Job

Since Riveiro announced his departure, rumors about McCarthy potentially taking over at Pirates have been circulating. McCarthy, who has previously stated his interest in returning to the PSL, has been linked to both Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in recent months.

With Pirates now on the lookout for a new coach, speculation has only increased. There have also been talks about McCarthy possibly leaving his current role in Kenya, though these remain just rumors. An insider recently dismissed these rumors, stating that McCarthy is happy with his role as coach of Kenya’s Harambee Stars.

“The rumors about Benni McCarthy leaving Harambee Stars for Orlando Pirates are just that – rumors. I was with him yesterday, and he’s very happy in Kenya. These rumors started in South Africa, not Kenya. He’s not leaving,” the source told SNL.

A New Era for Pirates

Next season will mark a new chapter for Orlando Pirates, with a fresh coach at the helm. As part of the changes, club captain Innocent Maela is among six players expected to leave Mayfair, further signaling a period of transition.

In contrast to January, the club is set for a busy transfer window, with four new players already signed and several Bafana Bafana targets reportedly linked with Pirates.
