Former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy has shared details about how close he came to managing Orlando Pirates before leaving the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for a stint in England. The South African football legend, who previously coached Cape Town City and AmaZulu FC, has been without a coaching role since his contract as assistant manager at Manchester United was not renewed last season.
In a recent interview, McCarthy revealed that he held discussions with Orlando Pirates’ chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, about taking the helm at the Soweto-based club. This was during the time Pirates were searching for a new coach before appointing Swedish tactician Kjell Jonevret.

“There was a chance [to coach Pirates] once upon a time,” McCarthy explained. “I spoke with the chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, and it was nearly a done deal. But I think, at the last minute, he chose someone with more experience because I didnβt have much managerial experience at the time.”
McCarthy expressed confidence that he could have excelled in the role, citing the quality of players in the Pirates squad at the time. However, he denied ever holding formal talks with other PSL giants like Mamelodi Sundowns or Kaizer Chiefs.
Currently, McCarthy is exploring his next move in football management, reflecting on a career that includes coaching achievements in South Africa and a UEFA Champions League-winning playing career with FC Porto.
