Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi is standing firm, insisting he will remain at the club beyond this season.
The 59-year-old Tunisian has had a mixed first year in charge at Naturena, leading the team to a ninth-place finish—only one spot higher than last year. However, Nabi’s reputation was saved by guiding Chiefs to their first trophy in a decade, winning the Nedbank Cup.
After their goalless draw against Polokwane City, Nabi told the media his future won’t be decided by missing out on the Top 8.
“I won’t let today’s result overshadow what the team achieved this season,” he said on SuperSport TV.
“FIFA acknowledges two champions: the league winners and the cup winners. No one can take away what the team accomplished by ending a 10-year trophy drought. For me, winning any official FIFA-recognized title is what matters.”
Ahead of that game, Nabi revealed he had a discussion with chairman Kaizer Motaung about strengthening the squad.
“On Friday, we talked about what’s needed in terms of players,” he told FARPost. “I won’t specify how many or which positions, but the recruitment team is working hard, and everyone understands the team’s needs.”
Nabi confirmed that talks with potential recruits have already started, and he’s confident the squad will improve significantly.
Despite rumors about his exit, Nabi insists he will continue as Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach next season—after all, he did bring a trophy back to Naturena.
